Green Development Strategy for Heavy Industry Under Dual Carbon Goals

On March 31, 2025, the kickoff meeting for the key consulting project "Green Development Strategy for Heavy Industry under Carbon Neutrality Goals" was held at Tianjin University. The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Chinese Academy of Sciences Academicians Duan Xue, Xu Chunming, Yuan Yingjin, and Bu Xianhe, as well as Hu Wenping, Executive Vice President of Tianjin University, and Tan Zhendong, Deputy Director and Party Member of the Tianjin Science and Technology Bureau. Representatives from various governmental departments, universities, and enterprises, such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Xinjiang University, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, and Tianjin Bohai Chemical Group, also participated in the meeting. The session was chaired by Fu Yindan, Director of the Office of the Tianjin Institute of Engineering and Technology Development Strategy and Executive Vice President of the Institute of Science and Technology Development at Tianjin University.

In his speech, Hu Wenping warmly welcomed the attending experts and expressed sincere gratitude for their participation. He emphasized the importance of the project team, led by Academician Duan Xue, leveraging the expertise of the advisory group to conduct thorough research into domestic and international development trends and competitive dynamics. The team is expected to focus on technological innovation, deepen industry-university collaboration, and work with local universities and businesses to support national strategic needs, particularly in carbon reduction and related fields. The goal is to provide academic support for reducing emissions and increasing efficiency in heavy industrial processes.

During the meeting, the project team presented key innovations in three areas: "Technological Path Innovation," "Cross-Industry Collaboration," and "Green Hydrogen Cost Reduction and Efficiency Enhancement." Academicians and experts discussed the technological feasibility and industrialization challenges of these innovations. They agreed that the proposed technology creates a new coupling reaction system that offers an efficient scientific solution to reduce emissions in heavy industrial processes, addressing significant technical barriers.

In his concluding remarks, Academician Duan Xue highlighted the need for technological innovation to break through bottlenecks and lead development. He stressed the importance of intellectual property management, talent cultivation based on actual needs, and leveraging interdisciplinary strengths in materials, chemical engineering, and environmental science to achieve industry-academia integration.

He also emphasized that the project's outcomes must be implemented to provide a disruptive solution for emissions reduction, aligning with national strategic priorities. The project will initially focus on demonstration applications in Tianjin, Shandong, and Zhejiang, ensuring quick commercialization and offering a Chinese solution for the green transformation of heavy industry.
