I’m Lak Hon from Malaysia. As the deputy leader of Tianjin University’s International Student Ambassador team, I am deeply passionate about supporting international students, helping them feel welcome, and fostering a sense of belonging on campus. My own journey in China began with many of the challenges new students often face—language barriers, cultural differences, and adapting to a new academic environment. These experiences have shaped my commitment to easing this transition for others by offering guidance, reassurance, and a friendly presence from the moment they consider applying to our university. Studying abroad is about more than academics; it’s an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, embrace new cultures, and build a life in an unfamiliar place. My role as an ambassador is to ensure that international students feel supported every step of the way, whether it’s through practical advice, emotional encouragement, or simply being someone they can rely on. One of the most rewarding aspects of this role is organizing events that bring together students from all corners of the globe. Cultural exchanges, language workshops, and social gatherings allow us to celebrate our diversity, share experiences, and form meaningful friendships. These moments not only enrich our university community but also foster mutual understanding and appreciation among students from different backgrounds. Looking to the future, I am eager to continue supporting students in all aspects of their university experience—academically, socially, and emotionally. By encouraging cultural exchange and understanding, I believe we can create a more connected and harmonious campus environment. Being an ambassador has taught me invaluable lessons about empathy, teamwork, and the importance of embracing diversity. My ultimate goal is simple: to ensure every international student feels valued, supported, and at home at Tianjin University.
