In May 2018, Tianjin University and the Hefei Economic Development Zone signed an agreement to jointly establish the Hefei Research Institute of Tianjin University (hereinafter referred to as the "Hefei Institute"). This research and development institution, located in the Yangtze River Delta region, leverages Tianjin University’s superior disciplines, educational experience, and international cooperation. The Hefei Institute focuses on automotive and internal combustion engines, medical and industrial integration, integrated circuit design, smart grid technology, and various other scientific research areas. Its objective is to establish a first-class domestic industrial innovation center that transforms research achievements and attracts talent, thereby providing industrial and intellectual support for Hefei’s evolution as a city of innovation with global influence.

The Hefei Institute has established the Advanced Power Center, Intelligent Power Center, Medical-Industrial Intersection Center, and Integrated Circuit Center. It has applied for 30 intellectual property rights and developed various technologies that contribute to epidemic control.
