Tianjin University launched “Root-Seeking Summer Camp in China” for Overseas Chinese Youth on July 4 at the Peiyangyuan Campus.
The event brought together overseas Chinese youth, university representatives, and guests from local and national organizations, including Vice Chairman Yang Kun of the Tianjin Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and Dean Li Qiang and Party Secretary Jin Xuan from Tianjin University’s School of International Education, among others.
At the ceremony, Tianjin University received the camp flag from All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, marking the official start of the program.
In his opening remarks, Dean Li Qiang emphasized that as China’s first modern university, Tianjin University has long been committed to promoting Chinese cultural heritage and facilitating cultural exchange. This year’s summer camp is built around three core themes: “Dialogue Between Past and Present,” “Integration of Knowledge and Practice,” and “Language Empowerment”. The program aims to immerse participants in the depth of Chinese civilization through a unique blend of science, technology, and traditional culture. He encouraged the young attendees to explore the essence of Chinese tradition, connect with cultural roots, and embrace the spirit of the nation while pursuing their dreams.
Han Dan, the delegation leader from the Xingzhi School in Sweden, expressed gratitude for the opportunity for overseas Chinese youth to reconnect with their heritage and for the cultural platform provided by the ACFROC, Tianjin FROC, and Tianjin University.
Li Jing, a faculty representative from Tianjin University, introduced the diverse and interactive activities planned for the Camp, including visits to the science and technology museum, evening readings along the Haihe River, and hands-on experiences with intangible cultural heritage. These activities are designed to help participants better understand Tianjin’s history and the development of modern Chinese cities.
Xiao Zeyue, a camper from Stockholm, shared her excitement:
“We will cherish this opportunity to trace our roots in China, learn traditional Chinese culture with sincerity, and witness China’s development with our own eyes. We hope to become ambassadors of Chinese culture and spokespersons for cultural outreach overseas.”
As a symbol of cultural exchange, Mr. Ye Wu, Associate Professor of Tianjin University and member of the Tianjin FROC, presented a hand-painted watercolor titled “Peiyang Academy” to Xingzhi School.
The ceremony also featured three dynamic performances, highlighting the beauty of cultural diversity and harmony. An Iranian student performed a violin rendition of the Chinese folk song “Jasmine Flower”. A Georgian student showcased the Long Fist, a traditional Chinese martial art. And Tianjin University faculty delivered a captivating dance performance titled “Ink Charm of Peiyang University”, embodying the charm of mutual cultural appreciation and harmony.
Following the ceremony, the Swedish participants embarked on a cultural and technological journey. In the tea art class “A Wondrous Leaf from the East”, participants were guided by a tea master in traditional Hanfu attire through the graceful process of Chinese tea-making and had the chance to taste the unique flavors of Chinese tea.
Professor Du Xiupin of Tianjin University delivered a thought-provoking lecture titled “The Fusion of Traditional Culture and Modern Technology – The Chinese Flavor in the Names of Scientific Achievements”. He explored how cultural elements embedded in the naming of cutting-edge technologies, such as HarmonyOS, autonomous driving systems, and AI large models, reflecting the continuing influence of traditional Chinese culture on modern science and innovation.
Li Yueyao, a camper from Stockholm, was deeply impressed:
“Behind each technological name is a touching Chinese story. This kind of cultural inheritance is truly fascinating.”
