 College History

Tianjin University, formerly known as Peiyang University, was founded on October 2, 1895, as China’s first modern university, pioneering modern higher education in the country. The university’s management education traces its origins to the early days of Peiyang University and was formally established with the creation of the Department of Industrial Management in 1942 during the “Northwest United University” period. Following China’s reform and opening-up, Tianjin University was among the first to restore management education nationwide. In 1978, it established the Institute of Systems Engineering, one of the earliest such institutes among four universities in China. In 1979, the Department of Management Engineering was founded. In 1984, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Tianjin University established the School of Management, becoming one of the first four institutions then to create a management school. In 2009, Tianjin University took the lead in implementing a faculty system reform for its management and economics disciplines, establishing the College of Management and Economics.

College of Management and Economics aspires to be a globally recognized educational institute of management and economics, pursuing teaching excellence and transformative research with impact. It develops leaders with fact-based thinking, innovative spirit and social awareness through the creation, application, dissemination and integration of management, economics and engineering knowledge.

Discipline Scope & Faculty Member Team

College of Management and Economics offers a broad spectrum of disciplines, encompassing three level-1 disciplines in management—Management Science and Engineering, Business Administration, and Public Administration—as well as the level-1 discipline of Applied Economics within economics and the level-2 discipline of Systems Engineering within engineering. The College has achieved remarkable success in disciplinary development, with Management Science and Engineering selected as a national first-class discipline and ranked 2nd (top 1%) in the 2024 Best Chinese Subjects Ranking. The Business Administration discipline has also made historic breakthroughs.

College of Management and Economics is distinguished by a high-caliber teaching and research team, comprising 196 professional faculty members, including 66 professors, 91 associate professors, and 39 lecturers. Among them are 10 national-level leading talents, 10 national-level young talents, 3 Tianjin Municipal Distinguished Teachers, and 9 recipients of the Baosteel Outstanding Teacher Award.

Current Students & Professional Degree Programs

College of Management and Economics has earned CAMEA, AMBA, and AACSB accreditations. In July 2018, in the first national professional degree evaluation by the Degree Evaluation Center, Tianjin University’s MBA program was rated A, the only such program in Tianjin.

Academic Competitiveness

Faculty members focus on cutting-edge international academic research, having published over 30 papers in top-tier international journals such as Management Science, Operations Research, MIS Quarterly, and Nature Climate Change in the past five years. These efforts have consistently driven the production of high-quality, original academic outputs, earning more than 50 research awards at the provincial and ministerial levels or above.

Concurrently, the College of Management and Economics aligns its research with national economic, social, and technological development, as well as major national strategic needs. In recent years, it has secured funding for 1 Major Project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 3 National Key Research and Development Program projects, 18 Key Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 7 Major Projects of the National Social Science Fund of China, and 3 Key Projects of the National Social Science Fund of China.

National Research Platforms and Bases

The College has been approved to establish more than ten national and provincial-level research platforms, including the first batch of Key Laboratories (Pilot) of the Ministry of Education for Philosophy and Social Sciences, the National Energy Storage Technology Industry-Education Integration Innovation Platform of Tianjin University (one of the first three among national universities), and the National Intellectual Property Strategy Implementation Research Base, among others.

Additionally, the College possesses over 1,000 square meters of experimental space and has invested more than ten million yuan in recent years to build state-of-the-art experimental conditions for scientific research. These include eye-tracking devices, motion capture systems, virtual reality setups, driving simulators, decision-making lab, real-time environmental data collection systems, and high-performance computing platforms, providing robust support for various cutting-edge research in economics and management.

International Cooperation

To enhance the level of international education, the College established the International Advisory Board for the Discipline of Management and Economics at Tianjin University in September 2014 (the "Board"). The Board is a prestigious advisory body composed of globally renowned business and political leaders, distinguished management scholars, economists, and prominent societal figures. It aims to provide strategic guidance and review for the long-term development of the Discipline of Management and Economics at Tianjin University, facilitate resource aggregation and integration, and serve as a bridge for communication and dialogue between the College and international academic and industrial communities. The College has successively appointed three cohorts of Board members. The third cohort includes 13 members, such as Dong Mingzhu, Chairman and President of Gree Electric Appliances; Tariq S. Durrani, former Vice President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Foreign Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering; and James M. Tien, Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and Professor at the University of Miami.

The College fully leverages the strengths of its disciplines and actively expands international partnerships, establishing long-term and stable cooperative relationships with numerous globally renowned universities. Since 2018, the College has signed various cooperation agreements with 15 universities from 8 countries and regions, including exchange programs, joint training initiatives, and dual-degree programs. These collaborations involve students across undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels and include institutions such as University College London, the University of Michigan, Moscow State University, Purdue University, the University of Maryland, the University of Reading, and the National University of Singapore.

Responsibilities

Chair Professor

1. Accurately grasp the development direction of the discipline, propose strategic, forward-looking, and innovative research visions, and lead the discipline to surpass or maintain internationally advanced levels in cutting-edge fields.

2. Committed to enhancing the overall quality and research capabilities of faculty, actively fostering and recruiting outstanding talents.

Outstanding Professor

(Candidates should not exceed 55 years of age at the time of selection)

1. Demonstrate a high level of teaching proficiency, possess experience or capability in cultivating top-tier innovative talents, complete all teaching tasks assigned by the university and college, engage deeply in teaching research and reform, and achieve outstanding teaching outcomes.

2. Possess an independent research direction aligned with the discipline’s development, capable of leading the discipline to address major national socioeconomic development needs and conducting academic research at an internationally advanced level.

3. Play a significant role in discipline development, research platform establishment, talent recruitment, and international exchange and cooperation.

Outstanding Associate Professor

(Candidates should not exceed 45 years of age at the time of selection)

1. Demonstrate a high level of teaching proficiency, possess experience or capability in cultivating top-tier innovative talents, complete all teaching tasks assigned by the university or college, engage in teaching research and reform, and achieve commendable teaching outcomes.

2. Conduct high-level scientific research with a direction aligned with the discipline’s development needs, demonstrate outstanding performance in relevant fields domestically and internationally, and earn recognition from peer experts.

3. Actively contribute to discipline development, research platform establishment, talent recruitment, and international exchange and cooperation.

Associate Professor

1. Pursue a research direction aligned with the discipline’s development needs, achieve certain academic accomplishments in their research field, and demonstrate considerable academic potential.

2. Actively participate in discipline development, attend high-level international academic conferences in the discipline, engage in other forms of international academic exchange activities, and take on or contribute to national and provincial-level scientific and technological projects.

3. Associate Professors should also have substantial educational and teaching experience, achieve notable results in improving educational and teaching quality, serve as key faculty in undergraduate and graduate education, and undertake teaching responsibilities for foundational or core professional courses. In principle, they should have at least two years of relevant experience in teaching and research.
