Bravo!Energy & Catalysis Adventure Team Wins National Award

The Energy & Catalysis Adventure Team from the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology has been awarded the prestigious China Youth May Fourth Medal (Group), a national accolade recognizing young collectives for their outstanding contributions to scientific innovation and societal advancement. Led by Professor Gong Jinlong, the team is an internationally renowned research group in carbon neutrality and green chemical innovation, driving solutions to critical challenges in sustainable development and energy transition.

The team has made significant breakthroughs in the production of propylene, a key industrial material used in plastics and pharmaceuticals. They developed a highly stable, non-toxic catalyst that reduces energy consumption and emissions while overcoming reliance on foreign-controlled technologies. This innovation has been featured in Science and incorporated into China’s national green transition plan, marking a milestone in the petrochemical industry’s move toward sustainability.

Looking to the future, the team has pioneered “artificial leaf” technology, which uses photoelectrochemical reactions to convert sunlight into hydrogen energy. Inspired by natural photosynthesis, this technology achieves world-leading efficiency in converting solar energy into chemical energy. Described as a “milestone in the field” by Science, it has the potential to revolutionize energy production and provide a scalable, sustainable solution to global energy challenges.

Beyond their research, the team is dedicated to developing young talent and fostering international collaboration. Under Professor Gong’s leadership, the group has trained a new generation of scientists, with many receiving national recognition, and has partnered with over 20 countries under the Belt and Road Initiative to share knowledge and advance low-carbon technologies globally.

The New Energy Chemical Innovation Team exemplifies the role of young scientists in addressing global challenges, advancing green technology, and contributing to a sustainable future. Their work reflects China’s commitment to innovation and international cooperation in the fight against climate change.
