The 5th International Symposium on Surface Earth System Science, hosted by the School of Earth System Science at Tianjin University, was successfully held in Tianjin from April 11 to 12, 2025.
The symposium gathered distinguished scholars including Academicians Tao Shu, Guo Huadong, Zhou Chenghu, Xia Jun, and Zhu Yongguan from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); CAS Foreign Academician Chen Deliang; Fellows from the Royal Society of Canada and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; as well as leading scientists holding fellowships in international professional societies.
The opening ceremony featured addresses by Academician Chai Liyuan, President of Tianjin University; Academician Liu Congqiang, Dean of the School of Earth System Science and Conference Chair; and Zhang Yongtao, Deputy Director of the Administrative Center for China's Agenda 21.
The symposium focused on cutting-edge topics in Earth sciences, facilitating in-depth discussions on critical issues including Earth system processes, observation and modeling of Earth systems, and Earth system governance and management. Over 400 participants from 15 countries through 15 plenary lectures, more than 170 parallel sessions' reports, lighting talks and posters to attended the symposium.
