The 5th China Regional and Country Studies Forum was held in Hangzhou from March 28 to 30, 2025, under the theme “How to Study the Global South.” Tianjin University’s Global South Institute, affiliated with the School of Foreign Languages, played an active role as a co-organizer, contributing to both panel discussions and conference coordination. A delegation led by Professor Wang Lisong, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and rotating chair of the Global South Institute, attended the forum and delivered a keynote speech.
The forum gathers leading experts in regional and country studies and related disciplines to discuss key theoretical, methodological, and strategic issues, fostering academic dialogue and consensus to advance a uniquely Chinese approach to the field.
Professor Wang Lisong delivered a keynote speech titled Interdisciplinary Integration in Humanities, Sciences, and Medicine: The Path of Tianjin University's Global South Institute. He shared insights into the university’s interdisciplinary initiatives across various fields and introduced innovative models for advancing Global South research. His presentation was met with strong interest from attending scholars.
Tianjin University remains committed to the national mission of talent cultivation and strategic academic development. The university has established a first-level doctoral program in regional and country studies and pioneered the founding of China’s first Global South Institute. Centered on Global South research, Tianjin University’s approach emphasizes talent training, academic research, think tank development, international cooperation, and social services, contributing to China's engagement with the Global South and its role in global governance.
Professor Wang Zhan, Executive Director of the Global South Institute and lead researcher for a major National Social Science Fund project, delivered a keynote speech titled Becoming Practitioners of the Global South. He highlighted the critical role of regional and country studies in providing insights into foreign political and economic systems. He emphasized the need for practice-based research to understand the governance models, economic trajectories, and strategic objectives of Global South nations, thereby positioning China as a key player in shaping a shared future for humanity.
Additionally, Professor Gou Yanjun, Assistant Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Director of the Global South Institute’s Office, chaired the fourth keynote session of the second parallel forum.
As Tianjin University celebrates its 130th anniversary this year, the Global South Institute aims to further establish itself as a world-class think tank with Chinese characteristics, producing high-quality research and policy recommendations while demonstrating the university’s commitment to national development and academic excellence.
