On March 6, 2025, in a classroom at Tianjin University’s Weijin Road Campus, associate professor He Huili stood before her students, beginning a new semester’s lecture on ancient Chinese literature. Her gentle voice guided the class through the richness of Chinese literary heritage, creating an immersive experience for her students.
Now in her sixth year of teaching at Tianjin University, He Huili, a scholar of Chinese literature and deputy director of the Taiwan Studies Institute, was recently recognized as a 2024 National March 8th Red-Banner Pacesetter for her outstanding contributions to cross-strait cultural exchange and the promotion of Chinese traditions.
A Passion for Shared Cultural Roots
With a deep appreciation for Chinese literature, He Huili has always believed in the cultural connection between people on both sides. Her academic career frequently brought her between Taiwan and the mainland, but in 2020, she made the significant decision to settle in the mainland with her family. Tianjin, with its rich cultural heritage and historical ties to prominent literary figures, felt like a natural choice.
At Tianjin University, she has played a key role in fostering cultural and academic exchanges. She established the Haixia Tongwen Academy to facilitate forums, lectures, and research initiatives that bring together scholars and students from both sides. She also spearheaded programs such as cross-strait cultural workshops and the China Ancient Literature Innovation Forum, using literature as a means to deepen mutual understanding.
Bridging the Gap Between Young Generations
He Huili is particularly committed to engaging young people in cross-strait dialogue. She believes that misunderstandings stem from a lack of firsthand experience and actively encourages Taiwan’s youth to visit the mainland. Through academic collaborations, cultural study camps, and joint university programs, she has helped many young Taiwanese gain a more authentic perspective of life in the mainland.
In her literature courses, He creates dynamic and interactive experiences that connect students with classical works. Whether through poetry gatherings, theatrical reenactments, or literary discussions, she inspires a deeper appreciation for Chinese cultural heritage.
Looking ahead, He hopes to further develop a cultural exchange platform at Tianjin University, bringing more young people together to foster understanding and shared identity. “I have a deep connection to both sides of the Strait,” she says. “I hope we can work together to build a brighter future.”
