Tianjin University Students Volunteer to Support Communities

Students and faculty at Tianjin University recently participated in a series of volunteer activities, including charity sales for people with disabilities, assisting metro passengers, and improving community environments, demonstrating their commitment to public service.

Students from the School of Precision Instrument and Opto-electronics Engineering teamed up with Chunlei Public Welfare, Nankai Xiangyu School, Nankai High School, and Fulun High School to organize a charity sale. At Beizhan Metro Station and International Plaza, volunteers and middle school students introduced handicrafts made by families with disabilities. Each item reflected the dedication and resilience of its creators, inspiring many pedestrians to stop, learn more, and contribute through purchases.

Meanwhile, volunteers assisted commuters at Leyuandao Metro Station. Guided by Zhang Mengyu, a dedicated volunteer and station supervisor, they explored the station’s cultural themes and discussed youth engagement in social initiatives. They then helped passengers navigate the station, purchase tickets, and assisted elderly and disabled commuters, easing congestion during peak hours.

"This experience showed me the true value of volunteering," said Wang Ziheng, a 2021 undergraduate student. "Helping passengers navigate the metro made me more empathetic. Seeing them travel smoothly made me realize that volunteering is not just about helping others—it’s also about personal growth."

That same day, 16 students from the School of Marine Science and Technology visited DayuanXinju Community for a volunteer initiative. They recorded inspiring community stories, assisted elderly residents, and helped protect the environment. Some cleaned the homes of seniors living alone, offered companionship, and listened to their concerns. Others joined community staff on river patrols, removing litter, educating citizens on ecological conservation, and promoting responsible fishing.

"Taking part in this initiative strengthened my sense of responsibility," said Xing Yutao from the School of Marine Science and Technology. "Whether interviewing veterans, assisting seniors, or protecting the environment, every small action makes a difference. As young people, we should actively engage in volunteer work and contribute to our communities."
