On January 13 and 14, 2025, the original drama Hou Debang, part of the "Pillars of the Republic—Tribute to Science Masters" project, was performed at the N2 University Hall of the University of Macau. The event attracted a full house for two consecutive days, with over a thousand students and faculty members attending to learn about the life and legacy of Hou Debang and experience the spirit of Chinese scientists.
The drama Hou Debang is a selected project under the national initiative "Pillars of the Republic—Tribute to Science Masters". It highlights the achievements and patriotism of Hou Debang, a distinguished professor at Tianjin University (formerly Peiyang University), a renowned chemist, and a pioneer of China's modern chemical industry. Through dialogues, actions, and emotions, the play vividly portrays Hou’s dedication, patriotism, perseverance, and pursuit of truth, inspiring audiences with the spirit of scientific inquiry. Since its inception in 2014, the play has been performed in numerous provinces and cities, including Tianjin, Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Guangdong, Henan, and Fujian, earning widespread acclaim and deeply resonating with young audiences.
"Tianjin University, originally established as Peiyang University on October 2, 1895, is the first modern university in China, marking the beginning of modern higher education in the country," said Han Qinghua, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Tianjin University. "The university has a mission to strengthen the nation through education, a motto of "seeking truth from facts," a commitment to rigorous academics, and a tradition of patriotism and innovation. Together, these values form the cornerstone of its 130-year legacy. Moving forward, we will continue to promote the spirit of scientists and focus on cultivating exceptional talents with patriotism, global vision, innovative thinking, and practical abilities. This will contribute to building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and advancing high-quality development."
During the performance, Hou Debang’s family members attended the event. His grandson, Hou Shengzheng, presented the book “Hou Debang: A Titan of Science” to Song Yonghua, President of the University of Macau. Additionally, a themed exhibition titled “A Titan of Science, A Model of Scholarship,” co-curated by Tianjin University and Tianjin Bohua Yongli Chemical Industry Co., was displayed at the venue. The exhibition offered attendees an opportunity to explore Hou Debang’s life and contributions before the performance, showcasing the scientist’s legacy from multiple perspectives.
