On December 30th, CCTV News reported that the “YunYao-1” series of 12 small satellites has been integrated into the China Meteorological Administration's (CMA) operational system. This marks the first time that commercial small satellite data has been approved for use by the CMA, enhancing China's weather forecasting capabilities.
The satellites provide around 15,000 occultation profile products daily, improving the spatiotemporal resolution of observations made by Fengyun meteorological satellites. This integration has increased the number of atmospheric profile products assimilated by China’s global weather prediction system by 2.48 times. These products support various services, including numerical forecasting, global typhoon monitoring, and short-term severe weather prediction.
Wang Jinsong, Director of the National Satellite Meteorological Center, noted that commercial small satellites are flexible, customizable, and complement Fengyun satellites, helping to meet operational needs. They also assist in validating new technologies for next-generation Fengyun satellites.
Developed by Tianjin YunYao Aerospace Technology Co., Ltd., the YunYao series was founded by Li Fenghui, a Ph.D. graduate from Tianjin University. The company has received multiple certifications and recognition as a national high-tech enterprise.
