On December 27, the closing ceremony of the "Bank of Tianjin 2024 Tianjin Drama Festival" and the awards event for the 2nd Tianjin University Students’ Drama Festival took place at Tianjin University's Weijin Road Campus. Tianjin University participated with two stage productions, both of which advanced to the final round. Ultimately, the university’s dramaThe Messagereceived the "Best Performance Award" in the Classic Interpretation category, whileLiu Ruihengwon the "First Prize" in the Original Excellence category, both the highest honors in their respective divisions. Tianjin University also received the Best Organization Award.
As part of the closing ceremony,The Messagewas performed as a showcase production. Adapted from the novel by Mai Jia, a recipient of the Mao Dun Literature Prize, the play was staged by the Peiyang Drama Troupe.The Messageis not only a vivid recreation of a historical era but also a profound exploration of themes such as humanity, faith, and sacrifice. The performance resonated deeply with the audience, encouraging reflection on history while cherishing peace and remembering the sacrifices made by national heroes for the independence of their country.
The dramaLiu Ruihengis part of the “Tianjin University Masters” series, which celebrates the spirit of distinguished alumni. Liu Ruiheng, a prominent alumnus of Peiyang University (now Tianjin University), was a pioneer in trauma medicine, modern medicine, and public health in China. The play recounts his journey from studying in the United States, where he became the first Chinese graduate of Harvard Medical School, to his return to China, where he served as the first Chinese dean of Peking Union Medical College, founded Beijing’s first health office, and established the Central Hospital in Nanjing. Liu also played a key role in organizing nationwide medical services and wartime healthcare efforts.
The Peiyang Drama Troupe, established in 1985, is one of the most prominent student drama groups in Chinese universities. Over the years, it has staged more than 30 domestic and international classics, includingCopenhagen,Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land, andThe Message. The troupe performs over ten productions annually as part of the university’s “Weekend Concert” program, earning widespread acclaim among students and faculty.
