Congrats to Prof. Liu Shuang on Winning 2024 DAMO Academy Young Fellow Award

On December 20, 2024, the winners of the 2024 "DAMO Academy Young Fellow Award" were announced. Among the 15 outstanding young scientists under the age of 35 across the country, Professor Liu Shuang from the Medical School was honored with this prestigious award. Notably, Liu Shuang is the first scholar from Tianjin to receive this award since its establishment in 2018.

About Liu Shuang

Professor Liu Shuang, born in February 1989, is a Distinguished Professor at Tianjin University, and a doctoral advisor. She is recognized as a leading national-level talent, serving as the chief scientist for key national research projects and as the deputy dean of Tianjin University's Medical School. Additionally, she is the director of the Mental Health Center, a youth chief scientist at the Haihe Laboratory for Brain-Machine Interaction and Human-Machine Integration, and a Principal Investigator (PI) at the National Key Laboratory for Advanced Medical Materials and Devices. Professor Liu has received numerous accolades, including the Tianjin Youth May Fourth Medal, the Tianjin Technological Invention Award, and the National Teaching Achievement Award.

Research Achievements

Professor Liu's research focuses on developing new theories, paradigms, and technologies for emotional physiological perception and neural regulation. Her work addresses significant engineering applications in fields such as mental health and aerospace medicine. As the chief scientist for key national research projects, Liu was the first to elucidate the mechanisms of gamma oscillation damage in the auditory cortex network of depression, identifying new intervention targets. Based on this, she developed the "Shengong-Shenxin" intelligent emotional interaction robotic system for accurate depression evaluation and intervention, which has successfully undergone multi-center clinical trials.

To date, Liu has published 67 academic papers as the first or corresponding author in leading journals such as Journal of Affective Disorders (JAD) and Transactions on Affective Computing (TAC). She holds 23 international and domestic invention patents and has received two provincial and ministerial-level technological invention awards.

The "DAMO Academy Young Fellow Award," established in 2018 by Alibaba Philanthropy and Alibaba DAMO Academy, is one of the first public academic awards in China dedicated to recognizing young scholars under the age of 35. The award aims to encourage young scientists to take on challenging research projects and inspire others to engage in scientific exploration. Each winner receives a prize of 1 million RMB (pre-tax).

In 2024, the award expanded its scope to include new disciplines such as agricultural science and atmospheric science, alongside the previously covered 10 fields, including information science, emerging interdisciplinary studies, mathematics, physics, chemistry, materials science, life sciences, medicine, astronomy, and geography.

Professor Liu's dedication to decoding emotional neurophysiology and advancing non-invasive, targeted interventions for mental illnesses exemplifies the spirit of the Award, inspiring the next generation of scientists to explore groundbreaking research.
