On December 22, Tianjin University celebrated the grand opening of its squash court at the Peiyangyuan Campus with a special event titled “The National Squash Team on Campus.” The event marked the formal introduction of squash to the university community.
Often referred to as “the Supreme Indoor Sport,” squash is a fast-paced game that blends speed, strength, strategy, and skill. This emerging sport has gained widespread popularity globally due to its unique appeal. Its inclusion as an official competition in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, announced by the International Olympic Committee last October, has further amplified its global prominence.
During the opening ceremony, athletes from China’s national squash training team delivered an electrifying exhibition match, showcasing the elegance and excitement of the sport. Their performance captivated the audience, earning rounds of applause. Attendees, including faculty and students, were eager to grab rackets and experience the dynamic sport firsthand under the guidance of the professional players. Squash team coach Wang Yan held an informative lecture, covering the sport's history, evolution, and facility requirements, while offering insights into its development in China. Wang encouraged broader participation in squash to collectively advance the sport's growth.
Yang Xianjin, Party Secretary of Tianjin University, emphasized the university's longstanding commitment to promoting sports and physical education. He highlighted that the introduction of squash and the new court aim to cater to the diverse athletic interests of students and staff, injecting new energy into campus sports culture. Yang encouraged the university community to embody the spirit of sportsmanship, contribute to national initiatives, and support China's journey toward becoming a global sports powerhouse.
The newly unveiled squash facility, located within the South District of the Peiyangyuan Campus, features three international-standard courts. Designed to meet professional specifications, the venue is equipped with advanced lighting, ventilation systems, seating areas, and locker rooms, ensuring optimal conditions for both training and competition. The facility is open free of charge to students and staff, with complimentary equipment available for users. Also, Tianjin University plans to incorporate squash into its physical education curriculum. By organizing squash experiences and competitions, the university seeks to diversify sports on campus and foster a vibrant and inclusive athletic culture.
