“I hope that you can apply the sports spirit of perseverance to your scientific research and daily study, and win first prizes in all walks of life for our country.” Guo Yan, the world champion of table tennis delivered a speech at the closing ceremony of Tianjin University’s first “Wang Zhengting Cup” Comprehensive Sports Meeting held on May 22.
The sports event is named after the famous alumnus Wang Zhengting, known as “Father of Chinese Olympics”. Starting from April 24, the sports meeting lasted for one month. It sets 12 major events and 128 minor events, including traditional track and field events and swimming, table tennis, badminton, tennis, chess, football, basketball, volleyball, tug-of-war, rope-skipping, and mini-marathon. A total of 298 gold medals and 831 medals were awarded.
Nearly 5,000 students and teachers registered for this year's games, 2,333 students and teachers won awards, and dozens of alumni from all over the world also participated in the campus mini-marathon and other activities.
At the closing ceremony, Tianjin university invited Guo Yan to deliver a speech to share his understanding of sports spirit with students, and hired him as a part-time instructor of the university’s table tennis team with the appointment letter issued on site.
“This is the first time that the university has held a long-period and comprehensive sports event. It is an useful attempt for sports education,” said the head of the university’s Sports Department, “ We will foster a better sports environment at TJU and encourage more teachers and students to participate in sports exercise and obtain metal and physical health.”
