From November 9th to 14th, the 11th Formula Student China (FSC) was held in Xiangyang, Hubei Province. Thanks to the remarkable achievements China made against the epidemic, it became the only country to be able to hold the FSC. Out of 101 competing teams, Peiyang Power Team from Tianjin University won second prizes for both overall performance and innovation, and ranked third in efficiency testing.
The Peiyang Power team consists of 23 students from the School of Mechanical Engineering, the School of Precision Instrument and Opto-electronics Engineering, the School of Civil Engineering and the College of Management and Economics, with associate professor Lin Jiewei and lecturer Song Kang as their instructors. It is greatly supported by the School of Mechanical Engineering, the subject group of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics, and the State Key Laboratory of Engines (Tianjin University), and sponsored by Weichai Power Co., Ltd., Continental, Infineon Technologies Co., Ltd., Aomeike Industry and Trade Co., Ltd. in Beilun District, Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, Supo Auto Parts Sales Co., Ltd. in Hebei Province, Easycomposites (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd., Altium Co., Ltd. and other enterprises.
As one of the founding teams of Formula Student China (FSC), Peiyang Power has participated in the contest for 11 consecutive years. This year, the team built a competing vehicle named "Haoyue XII" through the summer and autumn of 2020. “We worked very hard and spent many sleepless nights at our labs in Building 34 and 35. Luckily, our work paid off,” said Cui Xiaoqi, one of the team member, laughing.
Starting from 2010, the Formula Student China (FSC) centers on various fields of racing technology covering full-dimensional knowledge and skills of modern automotive industry such as vehicles, power, machinery, electronics, control, materials, mechanics, and ergonomics. It is a natural carrier of Emerging Engineering Education and a cradle for China’s automotive engineers.
In this year’s competition, the participating teams include not only universities with a longstanding fame for their vehicle engineering such as Jilin University, Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology at Weihai and Beijing Institute of Technology, but also universities well-known for energy and power engineering like Tianjin University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Tsinghua University and Southeast University. Eventually, a total of 74 teams saw their cars pass all inspections and get on the track.
After completing static vehicle inspection, noise testing, braking testing, and defense for design, 4 drivers and the "Haoyue XII" completed all individual events including the 75-meter drag racing, racing along an 8-shaped track, high-speed obstacle avoidance and 22-kilometer endurance race. The team ranked third in the fuel economy (efficiency testing) assessed with the endurance race at the same time, and won second prizes for racing technological innovation and for overall performance.
