Key Laboratory at School of Architecture Welcomes On-site Inspection

On the afternoon of September 10, 2020, an inspection group from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism visited the School of Architecture and conducted an inspection on the key laboratory of Information Technology for the Inheritance of Architectural Cultural Heritage. Among the experts were Director Ning Weiqun and Deputy Director Qiao Wei from the Ministry’s Science and Technology Division of the Science and Technology Education Department.

Approved in 2016, the laboratory is one of the second batch of key laboratories of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. It has been in operation for more than 3 years and has to receive an on-site inspection by the Ministry according to the "Regulations for the Evaluation of Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism".

The experts were first guided to see an exhibition that showed the laboratory’s representative academic achievements from 2016 to 2020 from aspects of Ming Great Wall research (military settlements and defense system research and spatial analysis), coastal defense military settlements and post system spatial distribution research, preventive protection of Dunhuang, Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor and other relics and fine digitization of cultural relics such as bronze carts and horses, intangible cultural heritage inheritance, smart museum technology and services, and digitalization of traditional Chinese villages, virtual reality, and spatial computing achievements. The teachers and students of the laboratory introduced the results of the exhibition in detail to the experts who advised on the relevant technology, development direction, and improvement strategy.

Professor Zhang Yukun, Director of the Laboratory, later presented a report on the construction of the laboratory to the experts. He introduced in detail the laboratory's research progress in three areas and six directions, including geographic information system and open space collaborative spatial information analysis, value evaluation protection planning and preventive protection, intangible heritage living inheritance and architectural heritage graphic information arrangement. The experts fully affirmed the research results obtained by the laboratory, and put forward constructive opinions on the research direction, the role of the academic committee, and the manifestation of the research results.

The inspection team also visited the laboratory research room, the architectural surveying and mapping exhibition hall, and the equipment room and other scientific research sites.

Director Ning said: "This technical means of accurately surveying and mapping the appearance of cultural relics, especially the method of recording the geographical location and size details of cultural relics in its entirety, has prepared fully for the restoration of cultural relics after natural disasters and other emergencies.”

Zhang Junyan, Director of Tianjin University’s Humanities and Social Sciences Division introduced the history and the development of Tianjin University, especially its progress in humanities and social sciences. She emphasized the strong support and guidance provided by the university for laboratory construction.

Song Kun, Party Secretary of the School of Architecture briefly introduced the scientific research work of the School. He said that the school attached great importance to laboratory construction and would continue to provide solid material guarantees and convenient conditions for laboratory operation.
