"New Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Industry" by Academician Yao Jiannian

On the morning of September 24, Mr. Yao Jiannian, President of the Chinese Chemical Society, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Dean of the Institute of Molecular Plus of Tianjin University, gave a wonderful lecture titled “New Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Industry” to the teachers and students in the Institute of Molecular Plus of Tianjin University.

Ma Xinbin, Executive Vice Dean of the Institute of Molecular Plus and Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology of Tianjin University, Liu Ning, Vice Dean of the Institute of Molecular Plus, as well as the Institute’s teachers and students participated in this event. Vice Dean Liu Ning presided over the event.

Vice Dean Liu pointed out that Tianjin University, China's first modern university, is about to celebrate its 125th anniversary. With the development over 125 years, Tianjin University has formed a comprehensive disciplinary layout of "consolidating engineering, strengthening science, revitalizing humanities and developing medicine ". Under the overall disciplinary layout of Tianjin University, the Institute of Molecular Plus, with development strategy of "new chemistry, chemical engineering, and industry" was founded based on the disciplinary intersection of chemistry and chemical engineering. With this regard, this first lecture in the new academic year is a magnificent new starting point.

As the founder of the Institute of Molecular Plus, Academician Yao shared with teachers and students the Institute’s original aspiration, future development, and talent training with the topic of "New Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Industry". He also answered questions interested students including scientific research and personal development.

Academician Yao pointed out the opportunities and challenges of the rapid development of Chemistry in China.

“The Institute of Molecular Plus should seek new ways of new chemical reactions. The key is innovation.” Academician Yao said.

“If chemical engineering is like the plateau at Tianjin University, the Institute of Molecular Plus will be the peak on the plateau." Academician Yao hoped that the Institute's research on new catalysts will lead to breakthroughs in chemical engineering, including equipment and scientific principles, as well as new chemical theories. He encouraged the teachers and students of the Institute to make their contributions to the scientific development. At the same time, he put forward requirements for the teachers and students, hoping that they can work and study hard, innovate bravely, and make great contributions to the country economically and scientifically.

Attaching importance to morality in talent training, Academician Yao taught students to put morality first. He encouraged students to integrate into the development and innovation of the Institute of Molecular Plus, and combine research with their interest and ability. He concluded his lecture with good wishes to teachers and students. All attendees were greatly encouraged by his ardent expectations and encouragement, and they also felt a heavy sense of mission and responsibility.

At the end of the event, the first-year students wore the badge of the Institute together.
