Liu Zi-zheng: Hardship is the Incentive for Growth

Liu Zicheng, a senior student from the College of Management and Economics (CoME) is going to graduate this summer. With a GPA as high as 93.72, Liu is about to end his undergraduate study with honor. He has been admitted to Tsinghua University and will pursue his doctor degree there.

When Liu first came to TJU, he chose to study Engineering Management. “I’m very interested in the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ and hope that one day I can apply what I learn to promote the initiative”, Liu made up his mind to perfect his professional knowledge and he passed 31 courses with scores all above 95.

Not content to be confined to sheer indoor learning, Liu believed that first-hand experience and on-site study mattered the same if he wanted to take up management in international construction projects. He spent summer and winter vacations in doing internship on various kinds of construction sites. “I witnessed and experienced how the builders carried out their work and what project management was like in practice. A new door was open to me, broadening my horizon and helping me combine theory and practice and then turn them into true knowledge of my own”, Liu noted.

Li Zicheng is a vigorous learner. Apart from his professional study, Liu not only developed a great interest in mathematics, but also minored in Finance in Nankai University.

“Math is challenging yet intriguing. I like challenges and for me, hardship is the incentive for growth”, Liu learnt math on his own and has won several awards in the field including the first prize in the National Mathematics Competition Finals. He also excelled in the financial study and once led a team to explore the typical lifeline system coupling risk of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Liu seized every moment to refine himself. He is a book lover. There are more than 300 books in his dormitory. He prefers to read ancient poetry written by modern poets. “The poems sometimes reflect the ups and downs of the poets’ life and their courage and wisdom to weather the storms. They are like beacon to me, lighting my road forward and teach me to brave any difficulties I encounter in my life’, Liu said.

Liu Ziqiang was bestowed the title of the Outstanding Student Model of Tianjin University (TJU), the highest honor in the university in 2018 as the youngest awardee.
