In the COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control, a large number of brave and courageous people from Tianjin University, who either stay to protect the safety of the campus, or go to the front line of the "epidemic war" clad in their white protective gear or diligently labor to accelerate scientific research. Let's learn about these brave young people of Tianjin University and their fight against the epidemic.
Medical staff
Su Liuchao is the chief physician of general internal medicine at TJU’s Tianjin Hospital. After submitting a letter applying to fight in the battle against the novel coronavirus, Su Liuchao and his 138 colleagues embarked on a flight to Wuhan on 27 January.
"Before entering the red zone, we were scared. But from the moment we set foot in the red zone, we were not be afraid of anything anymore. We had only one goal, which is to cure and save people." Said Su Liuchao.
Zhao Pei is the deputy head nurse of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Tianjin University’s Haihe Hospital. On January 21, she joined the emergency team as soon as possible and volunteered to undertake the work of receiving intensive care unit (ICU) patients
"Young people must play the role of young people, and dedicate their strength to the country no matter what position they are in." she said.
Scientific research workers
In this battle without the smoke of gunpowder, not only our soldiers in white are going to the front line, but also many scientific researchers are taking up science and technology, humanity’s most powerful weapon in the fight against diseases. They are fighting day and night to provide strong scientific and technological support for winning the people's war of epidemic prevention, control, and resistance.
As one of the eight units in the country, the new coronavirus antigen rapid detection kit team was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology for "rapid detection of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) On-site Product Development and emergency response". The products have been clinically certified at Wuhan's Vulcan Mountain hospital and have gained Conformite Europeenne (CE) authentication following large scale clinical verification.
"Various medical institutions, research and development teams, and everyone form an alliance. These people with a sense of mission gather together to do something to fight the epidemic." Said Du Kang, an alumnus of Tianjin University and a member of the research and development team for the coronavirus nucleic acid detection kit.
He Meihang, a young teacher from the School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics and amember of the research and development team for the coronavirus nucleic acid detection kit, said: "We developed and tested ourselves at the same time. We use blood from our own fingers to check the immunization test strips. Sometimes we collect it several times a day, and our finger hurts when we eat."
Volunteers
In addition to front-line medical staff, scientific research workers in the scientific research battlefield, there are many ordinary people, from all walks of life with different backgrounds, but in the face of the epidemic, they contribute a lot and have a common name: volunteers.
Shi Bowen, a volunteer with the Jilin Medical Volunteer Association and a 2018 TJU Civil Engineering master’s degree student said,
"Although I can't be on the front line in Wuhan, I must do my best to respond to the needs of the times with voluntary service, and help those around me."
Zhang Zihui is a 2019 undergraduate student form TJU’s School of Science and one of TJU’s volunteers “fighting the epidemic with compassion”. She said, “As a student of Tianjin University, I want to use my actual actions to pay homage to volunteers to the front line to fight the epidemic, and to write about responsibility of Tianjin university."
Tianjin University Alumni helping in the community
In addition to the faculty and students in school, there are countless people who are TJU alumni. They are on duty in the community, household surveys, and customs quarantine. They are in various positions displaying their love of their country and demonstrating responsible citizenship.
Song Wenjie, Deputy Mayor of Beisi Town, Heshan City, Laibin, Guangxi and a 2017 graduate of Tianjin University said: " If my country needs me, I will not hesitate to be back to the battlefield. Because in my opinion, if you don't fight side by side with your compatriots at this time, you feel like a deserter. So, it's my duty to go back to work. There are medical staff on the front lines who are willing to die. We need grass-roots prevention and control to cut off the transmission channels. Since we work at the grass-roots level, we should undertake a task when we need to.”
