Dr. Chunfeng Song’s group from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering published an important review “Absorption-microalgae hybrid CO2 capture and biotransformation strategy—A review” in International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control.
The review summarized the existing absorption-microalgae hybrid CO2capture processes and discussed the advantages and challenges of carbon capture and microalgae biotransformation integrated strategies.
In the hybrid system, carbon could be more efficiently utilized via microalgae in the form of bicarbonate, and converted into value-added ingredients without energy-intensive regeneration. The influential factors on the absorption-microalgae hybrid system were investigated. In addition, potential solutions for intensifying the absorption-microalgae hybrid process were also put forward. Compared to the conventional CO2absorption and microalgae fixation method, the hybrid process could be a competitive alternative to CO2 capture from industrial emissions.
