Fancy Course: How to Produce New Year Pictures

Wu Kefan, a student from the School of Foreign Languages and Literature arrived one morning atthe Yang Liuqing New Year Pictures art inheritance base located in the 16th dormitory in Qi Yuan on the new campus. He was there to participate in a special class, learning to make some traditional folk art.In class, Wu colored a newly made New Year painting called“Prosperity in the New Year.” He has been attending this class for two months.Together with his classmates, Wu fully experienced how traditional New Year paintings came into being through techniques such as ticking, carving, printing, drawing, mounting and so on.

Founded in 2016, the Yang Liuqing New Year Pictures art inheritance base at TianJin University is one of the first batch of art inheritance basesof excellent Chinese culture authorized by the Ministry of Education.The base has opened an elective course available to all TJU students since the beginning of this year, teaching the“Inheritance of Yang Liuqing wooden board new year paintings and colored drawing practices.”This course is taught by Huo Qingshun and Zhang Hong, who are national-level inheritors of Yang Liuqing New Year pictures.Students can get two credits after finishing all the courses in a semester.
