The First International Concrete Dragon Boat Competition was co-sponsored by the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship of Zhejiang University and Zhejiang University/University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Institute. It was co-organized by the American Concrete Institute, organized by the International Campus Youth League Committee of Zhejiang University, and guided technically by the Architectural Society of China and the National Concrete Structure Teaching and Research Committee. A total of 27 teams from top universities, including theUniversity of Southern California, Tianjin University, Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and so on, participated in the Competition.

In this competition, the participants used concrete, an essential material for modern engineering, to create dragon boats in the traditional Chinese style. They also participated in racing and competitive events, material strength tests, and report writing. The participants are required not only to grasp the cutting-edge technologies about concrete materials and be able to apply them, but also to have a good command of structural design and analytical and computational ability as well as interdisciplinary knowledge, imagination, creativity and artistic design ability.

According to the competition regulations, dragon boats should be made of cement-based curing materials, concrete and other optional materials, and the volume ratio of concrete in the hull should be more than 50%.

In addition, a power engine system and remote control system are installed on the boats. By using remote control, competitors control the navigation of dragon boats and undergo straight-line racing and obstacle maneuvers. In terms of each team's technical report, technical design defense, material testing results and navigation competitions, the Technical Committee marks the total score and determines the final ranking of the Competition.
