Winter Gifts from Tianjin University

In late autumn, Tianjin University arranged once again to give warm clothes as gifts to first year students with financial difficulties and to invite them to eat dumplings, a traditional food for the winter solstice, during their very first season away from home and family.

So, at the beginning of Winter, the warm-clothes-giving event was held at the Peiyangyuan Campus of Tianjin University. There was laughter in the dining hall and the pleasant aroma of dumplings in the air. Zhang Fengbao, Vice President of Tianjin University, Li Jingsong, Deputy Director of the Office of Student Affairs, and Wang Mengbin, Deputy Director of the Logistics Department, ate dumplings with the students, asking whether they had adapted to college life, how they were getting along with their study, and whether they needed any help. Vice President Zhang Fengbao was also concerned about whether the winter clothes fitted the students well and whether the dumplings suited their taste. After tasting delicious dumplings, 90 first years received the attractive and fashionable down jackets, warm clothes and scarves which they chose for themselves. Having gratefully received the winter clothes, the students wrote their feelings on the message board:

"I am a fussy eater, but the dumplings prepared by our university are really delicious. I am grateful to our dear TJU," a student said with smile.

"The clothes are so good-looking and the scarves feel so soft. Tianjin University in others’ eyes is an enviable university." said a first year excitedly.

From 1992 Tianjin University has continued to purchase warm clothing for undergraduate students with financial difficulties every winter for 27 years. Furthermore, preparatory students were included this year. The students were able to choose the clothes for themselves among their favorite and the most suitable of 10 down jackets, 24 scarves and 2 sets of thermal underwear and add them to an online “shopping cart”. The university then paid for them and had the gifts delivered so they could experience the warmth and caring of TJU in their first winter away from home.
