New Breakthrough: Tianjin University's Psychiatry/Psychology Enters the ESI Global Top 1%

On May 14, the latest data from Clarivate's Essential Science Indicators (ESI) showed that Tianjin University's Psychiatry/Psychology subject area has been ranked in the ESI global top 1%. This is the university's seventh medical and health-related subject area to enter the ESI global top 1%. To date, Tianjin University has 19 subject areas ranked among the ESI global top 1%, marking another important breakthrough in the university's development of a high-level disciplinary system.

Psychiatry/Psychology covers a range of fields, including mental health, psychological well-being, cognitive behavior, learning psychology, and developmental psychology. It is an important interdisciplinary field connecting health, behavioral, and educational sciences. In recent years, in response to major national strategic priorities, Tianjin University has continued to refine its unique development strategy by focusing on interdisciplinary areas such as brain-computer interfaces, psychiatry, and psychology. Relevant research teams have conducted theoretical, methodological, and key technological studies on emotion decoding and regulation, forming a complete technological chain that covers brain signal acquisition, encoding and decoding, and translational applications.

At the same time, grounded in mental health education for university students, Tianjin University has long focused on research into psychological crisis intervention and has gradually developed a distinctive model in which scientific research and practical application reinforce each other. In 2021, the Psychological Crisis Research and Intervention Working Group of the Expert Steering Committee for Mental Health Education in Higher Education Institutions under the Ministry of Education was affiliated with Tianjin University. In 2023, the Tianjin University Center for Psychiatry was jointly established by the Medical School, the Psychological Counseling Center, and Tianjin Anding Hospital. The center has carried out systematic, collaborative efforts in medical services, talent cultivation, research, and student mental health promotion, providing strong support for the discipline's robust advancement.

Taking this disciplinary breakthrough as a new starting point, Tianjin University will continue to implement the national strategies of building a leading country in education, science and technology, and health. The university will further deepen multidisciplinary integration and strengthen forward-looking planning and systematic development. It will continuously enhance the discipline's academic depth and innovation capacity, raising the overall strength of Psychiatry/Psychology to a new level. These efforts will provide solid support for the development of a world-class university.
