Tianjin University’s Materials Science Enters ESI Top 1‱ Globally

Tianjin University’s Materials Science discipline has newly entered the top 0.01% (1‱) worldwide in the latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) rankings released on January 8.

According to the January 2026 update published by Clarivate Analytics, the ESI data are based on publication and citation performance from January 2015 to October 2025.

Compared with the previous ESI release in November 2025, six universities in mainland China recorded new entries in the top 0.01% (1‱) category. These newly ranked disciplines include Chemistry at Nanjing University, Chemistry at Peking University, Engineering at Northwestern Polytechnical University, Materials Science at Tianjin University, Materials Science at South China University of Technology, and Plant and Animal Science at Northwest A&F University.

In addition, a total of 369 disciplines worldwide entered the top 1‰ category in the current release. Compared with the previous ESI update in November 2025, five Chinese universities added new disciplines to this tier.

At the top 1% level, the latest ESI data show that 74 universities in China added a combined total of 81 disciplines compared with the November 2025 release, pointing to an overall expansion of high-impact research outputs nationwide.
