New Yue Opera "Princess Wencheng" Brings Classical Stories to Tianjin University

On the evening of December 14th, the independently created new Yue Opera “Princess Wencheng” was brilliantly performed at Tianjin University (TJU)'s Peiyangyuan Campus. Co-presented by TJU teachers and students and Rockcheck Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe, the show marked a highlight of the university’s weekend concerts celebrating its 130th anniversary.

Based on the historical event of the marriage alliance, the opera vividly depicts Princess Wencheng's journey to Tibetan Plateau with grains, herbs and craftsmen. It highlights her efforts in integrating Han and Tibetan cultures, symbolizing the power of cultural exchanges and the enduring friendship between the Han and Tibetan peoples.

Performers used delicate body movements, facial expressions and gestures to vividly portray Princess Wencheng's perseverance and Songtsen Gampo, the Tibetan King's generosity. The poetic lines and classical melodies emphasized the inner emotions of the characters.

The grand stage design, combined with symbolic lighting and elegant dances, recreated the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty and the vastness of the Tibetan Plateau, immersing the audience in a journey through a thousand years of history.

A TJU student commented, "It's my first time to appreciate Yue Opera. I'm deeply moved by the beautiful melodies and dances and inspired by Princess Wencheng's patriotic spirits." A teacher praised the troupe for preserving the charm of traditional Yue Opera while infusing it with modern stage technology and innovative storytelling, providing young students with an excellent platform to learn traditional culture and strengthen cultural confidence.

This performance exemplifies "High Art on Campus" and embodies the theme of ethnic unity. Serving as a bridge of art, it conveys the significance of fostering a strong sense of community, inherits cultural roots, and inspires youth to take on responsibilities.
