Tianjin University hosted the 2025 Mao Yisheng Student Science and Technology Award review meeting and the 17th National Forum on University Student Work on November 27, bringing together experts from 17 leading institutions to explore new approaches to cultivating top-tier civil engineering talent in an era defined by digital and intelligent transformation. Held under the theme of developing innovative talent-training models, the event drew senior representatives from universities across the country and reaffirmed the Mao Yisheng Foundation’s long-standing commitment to fostering scientific talent.

In his welcome remarks, Han Qinghua, Vice Secretary of the Party Committee of Tianjin University, underscored the university’s historical ties with Mao Yisheng, who once served as president of its predecessor, and highlighted ongoing efforts to advance civil engineering education through interdisciplinary integration and “Emerging Engineering Education” initiatives aligned with national strategic priorities. Mao Yulin, Honorary Chair of the Beijing Mao Yisheng Science & Technology Education Foundation, reviewed the foundation’s 34-year contribution to promoting science and education, noting that its combined structure of award selection and academic discussion offers both a mechanism for recognizing emerging talent and a platform for sharing best practices in engineering education.

During the review session, the expert panel approved nine candidates for the Engineering Education Student Award and twenty-nine for the Railway “Hope Star” Award, with final results to be submitted for official confirmation. The forum also featured keynote presentations, including a report by Wu Jing of Tsinghua University on innovative models of talent cultivation, which sparked extensive discussion among participating universities. Delegates exchanged institutional experiences, explored opportunities for collaboration and resource sharing, and discussed strategies for advancing engineering education amid rapid technological change.

Participants concluded the event with visits to several of Tianjin University’s key academic and cultural facilities, including the University History Museum, the Feng Jicai Museum, and the large-scale earthquake engineering simulation research facility, gaining firsthand insight into the university’s research strengths and its commitment to fostering a comprehensive environment for talent development. The gathering provided fresh momentum for collaborative innovation in engineering education and for nurturing the next generation of leaders in civil and transportation engineering.
