TJU Academician Inspires Youth Through Science Outreach

On November 5, Liu Congqiang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and dean of the School of Earth System Science at Tianjin University, visited Xinhua High School in Tianjin to deliver a lecture titled Global Change and the Future of Humanity. More than 400 students and teachers attended onsite, while the session was livestreamed to middle and high schools citywide.

Liu introduced complex scientific topics such as climate change, isotope geochemistry, and element cycles through vivid examples from everyday life, helping students understand how global environmental issues relate to their own experiences. Combining research data and satellite imagery, he presented the interconnectedness of human activity and Earth’s systems in an engaging and accessible way.

Before the lecture, Liu held an informal discussion with the school’s geography teachers and students, offering insights into secondary-school teaching and encouraging them to pursue curiosity-driven learning. His approachable manner and enthusiasm for science deeply impressed the audience.

The event formed part of Tianjin University’s ongoing public science education initiative, which brings leading scholars into classrooms to promote scientific literacy and environmental awareness. By bridging higher education and secondary learning, TJU continues to inspire the next generation to explore science and contribute to a sustainable future.
