From University Teacher to World Champion, Zhu Yuling Triumphs

——Tianjin University's Zhu Yuling Returns to International Competition and Wins Women's Singles Title at 2025 WTT US Grand Smash

Zhu Yuling, an associate professor and table tennis instructor at Tianjin University, secured an impressive victory at the 2025 World Table Tennis (WTT) US Grand Smash, defeating Chen Yi 4-2 in the women’s singles final. This marks a remarkable return to international competition for Zhu, who retired from elite sports in 2021 and joined Tianjin University's faculty in 2023.

“To return to competition feels like a dream come true,” Zhu said after her victory. “I’m still absorbing this moment, and I hope this dream continues.”

Back at Tianjin University, students and faculty celebrated Zhu’s achievement enthusiastically, gathering to watch their respected “Teacher Zhu” competing at the highest international level.

“I’m incredibly proud to see our teacher shine globally,” said Yang Xinyu, a student athlete under Zhu’s coaching. “She’s not only our instructor but also our role model in overcoming challenges and pursuing dreams.”

Zhu Yuling is no stranger to success, having amassed 10 world titles, 11 Asian championships, and 6 national championships during her professional career. After retiring from professional sport, she chose Tianjin University as the place to pursue her long-held dream of campus teaching, saying, “I always desired the campus life I missed during my professional athlete career.”

At Tianjin University, Zhu quickly adapted to her new role, leading undergraduate and postgraduate courses, establishing the “Yuling Studio” to coach beginners and advanced students alike, and developing innovative sports education programs. Under her guidance, the university’s table tennis team has gained notable achievements in national collegiate competitions.

Over the past two years, Zhu has also spearheaded the creation of a three-tiered campus table tennis tournament system, actively promoting table tennis culture among students and staff. Her efforts have made the university a vibrant hub for table tennis enthusiasts, hosting hundreds of matches annually and engaging thousands of students.

Reflecting on her dual role as an educator and athlete, Zhu said, “Teaching is a profession that influences lives deeply. My students give me the courage and confidence to face any challenge, whether in the classroom or on the court.”

Zhu's journey exemplifies Tianjin University’s dedication to fostering diverse talent and supporting individuals in achieving excellence in multiple fields. With the motto “You have infinite possibilities,” Zhu continues to inspire students and colleagues alike, demonstrating the university's commitment to nurturing dreams and achieving excellence.
