About the Lecture: Mercury is a neurotoxin, and trace levels of methylmercury exposure could seriously affect the human’s health. The anthropogenic mercury releases due to human activities have increased by three folds since the Industrial Era. In October, 2013, over 100 countries agreed to sign a global treaty “Minimata Convention on Mercury” under the coordination of UNEP to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury. This treaty entered into force August, 2017. This lecture will talk about: 1) the current mercury pollution situation in China; 2) the challenges and opportunities of mercury pollution control in China; and 3) how the newly developed mercury isotope technique helps the implement of “Minimata Convention on Mercury”.
