TJU Science Bases Team Up for Public Science Classes

A science outreach event featuring more than 60 interactive mini-classes will open on Sept. 19 at the Tianjin Cultural Center Square, offering the public hands-on opportunities to explore emerging technologies.

The event, themed “Intelligence Illuminates the Galaxy, Science Inspires the Future,” is part of Tianjin's 2026 National Science Popularization Month and will also serve as the main Science Popularization Month event in the city's Hexi District. It is jointly organized by Tianjin University and the People's Government of Hexi District.

The program will also launch a series of science and technology innovation tasks. Primary and secondary school students across Tianjin are now being recruited to join the public-interest science classes, with selected participants teaming up with master's and doctoral students from universities to complete innovation projects.

More than 10 science education bases at Tianjin University will participate in the event, covering areas including intelligent connected vehicles, smart grids, internal combustion power, mechanical engineering, brain-computer interfaces, thermal science, fluid mechanics, emergency medicine, precision instruments and optoelectronic engineering, robotics and intelligent manufacturing. Several science education bases operated by companies will also take part.

A major feature of the event will be its emphasis on hands-on experience and mixed-age learning. Each mini-class will use real scientific and technological equipment as teaching tools, with technologies such as autonomous cleaning vehicles, interactive robots and artificial intelligence application systems on display.

The event will also pair university students with primary and secondary school students in joint science and innovation activities, encouraging participants of different ages to learn from one another.

Young participants will be able to get a close look at cutting-edge technologies, hear master's and doctoral students explain the principles behind them, and take part in hands-on experiments. They will also work in teams with university students to explore scientific and technological ideas and develop their own innovation projects.

The event will be held in two sessions. In the morning, around 60 science mini-classes will be open to the public free of charge, allowing visitors to stop by and take part in interactive activities. In the afternoon, participating teams will receive specially designed innovation tasks and work together to create original science and technology projects on site.

Registration for the science mini-classes is now open. Interested primary and secondary school students can register through the official WeChat account of the Tianjin University Intelligent Connected Vehicle Science Education Base.
