Warmth Meets Tech: Tianjin University Welcomes New Graduate Students

Tianjin University (TJU) welcomed first-year graduate students on September 10. Across the campus, various schools have woven thoughtful care and professional mentorship into their orientation programs, guiding new TJUers as they take their first steps into advanced academic research.

A sense of belonging begins with a carefully curated welcome gift. The School of Architecture presented every new student with a university badge as their "first gift" of enrollment. More than just a symbol of TJU identity, the badge carries the school's hopes and blessings, offering students a warm, home-like embrace the moment they step through the gates.

The School of New Media and Communication invited students to handwrite letters to their future selves, depositing them in a special mailbox to be opened at their graduation ceremony. The school also provided exclusive "launch" tote bags for the new cohort.

Cutting-edge exploration was also on full display at the School of Artificial Intelligence. The School organized a showcase of its laboratories' latest innovations. Intelligent robotic arms demonstrated precision manipulation, while quadruped robot dogs acted as special "volunteers," nimbly navigating crowds to help students carry their luggage. During interactive sessions, students and their parents got up close with the smart devices, experiencing firsthand how scientific research translates into real-world applications.

The School of Computer Science and Technology integrated its research achievements directly into orientation services. "Xiaotang," a desktop robot developed by Professor Zhang Yazhou’s team, served as an orientation assistant, providing real-time answers to campus inquiries.

Bridging orientation with future academic education, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering designed an eco-friendly cultural gift pack to promote green concepts. During check-in, new students were also guided through the school's history museum to learn about its development and professional ethos.

At the School of Precision Instrument and Opto-Electronics Engineering, handwritten messages from academicians offered profound encouragement for the students' research journeys. They called on the new cohort to embrace a spirit of seeking truth from facts and striving for excellence, and to dedicate themselves to research that addresses critical global needs. By integrating the role models of these academicians into the orientation, the school aims to instill a sense of responsibility and mission in students right from the start of their academic pursuits.
