From November 21 to 23, the event series "Four Decades of Systems Engineering, Intelligence Inspiring Future Chapters" – the 2025 Academic Annual Conference of the Complex System Management Branch of the Society of Management Science and Engineering and the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the Journal of Systems Engineering – was held at Tianjin University's Weijin Road Campus.
Over 200 senior experts and scholars in the field of systems engineering and management science from across the country gathered at the College of Management and Economics (CoME) of Tianjin University (TJU) to collectively review the glorious 40-year journey of the Journal of Systems Engineering, deeply explore the cutting-edge theories and innovative practices of complex system management in the digital intelligence era, and pool wisdom for constructing China's autonomous knowledge system of complex system management. The theme of this conference was "Systems Engineering in the Digital Intelligence Era."
Professor Yang Xianjin, Secretary of the Party Committee of Tianjin University; Yang Xiaoguang, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Systems Engineering; and Jia Bin, Director of the Complex System Management Secondary Branch of the Society of Management Science and Engineering, delivered addresses at the conference. Keynote reports were given by Sheng Zhaohan, Professor at the School of Engineering Management, Nanjing University; Chen Shou, Professor at the School of Business Administration, Hunan University; Tan Yuejin, Professor at the School of Systems Engineering, National University of Defense Technology; and Wang Hongwei, Professor at the School of Management, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The conference was chaired by Du Huibin, Chair Professor of Tianjin University and Dean of CoME.
During the conference, the commemorative film "Systems Engineering: The Power Changing China" and the joint commemorative special issue of the Journal of Systems Engineering were released. The conference also featured a forum for high-level academic journals in management and economics, an editorial board meeting for the Journal, and sub-forums for the academic annual conference, providing a high-level academic exchange platform for attending guests and scholars, and promoting interdisciplinary integration and innovation.
The conference was hosted by the Society of Management Science and Engineering, the Chinese Society of Systems Engineering, and the University Alliance for Constructing China's Autonomous Knowledge System for Complex System Management. It was jointly organized by CoME of TJU, the Editorial Department of the Journal of Systems Engineering, and other units.
The Complex System Management Branch is affiliated with the Chinese Society of Management Science and Engineering. Its purpose is to gather the wisdom of researchers in disciplines such as systems science and engineering, and modern management science and engineering, fully integrate multidisciplinary knowledge including complex system theory, management science, statistics, operations research, as well as rapidly developing modern technologies like artificial intelligence, computer science, information and intelligent decision-making. It aims to study the fundamental theories and analytical methods of complex system management, advance the application of complex system management in social management, engineering management, and other complex systems, and provide efficient, stable scientific management method support for building China into a society of strength.
The Journal of Systems Engineering was founded in 1985. It is sponsored by the Chinese Society of Systems Engineering and undertaken by Tianjin University, serving as a national first-level academic publication in the field of systems engineering and management science in China. Since its inception, it has been committed to promoting the development of systems engineering theory and methods and has become a widely influential academic exchange platform in this field.
The successful hosting of the conference not only served as a heartfelt tribute to the forty years of determined progress of the Journal of Systems Engineering but also marked the full launch of the complex system management discipline on a new journey in the digital intelligence era. The intellectual achievements consolidated at the conference will continue to inject strong momentum into promoting the prosperous development of China's management science and engineering disciplines and serving the nation's major strategic needs.
